I Want To Collect Morgans And Walkers, Where To Begin?

I like these two coins in their own right and I've been interested in dabbling in numismatics for a while. I'm interested in the rare stuff, I can buy the commons all day long for spot. Are there any good sites to read up on this subject that anyone can reccomend?

Here's what I would recommend for a person beginning - its simple, painless and you'll learn a lot........get a copy of Coin Collecting for Dummies by Ron Guth......it will give you all the information you need to start in numismatics.........regardless of what coins you want to get into (and I am into Morgans myself).

THEN - if you decide to stick with Morgans and Peace Dollars, at least for the Morgans, pick up A Guide Book of Morgan Silver Dollars by Q. David Bowers.........that one will save you hundreds of dollars in overpriced coins and is especially good...........and the third book The Expert's Guide To Collecting and Investing in Rare Coins by Q. David Bowers.........those are the three top books (altho the Official Red Book is also a great book to get).

Then really read and study them. Yes, you can find a lot of info on websites, but these books you can carry with you when you shop or go to shows........especially the Morgan Dollar one (they also make one for Peace Dollars)

In those three is a lifetimes knowledge on the subject.

What Master Ho said.

I would also buy the book Coin Grading and Counterfeit Detection.

This book offers the grades from Poor 1 to Mint state 70 for all US coins. Very handy book to have at the shows and dealers. This is the grading scale PCGS uses.

I use this book a lot, and it has saved me money on purchases. A dealer may say this coin is XF extra fine, but the guide book grades it fine. Either the dealer takes what I offer, or I move on. Either way, I have saved money.

Coin-grading is an art. And it takes years to grasp, and much longer to master....That's why coin-grading services have become so incredibly popular over the last 10-20 years. If for investment, buy graded coins.
PCGS is clearly the most recognized, closely followed by NGC, and then ANACS. (Many consider ANACS the "collectors" grading service.)
These are the only three that publish pop. reports.

Rev, If you're interested in this for FUN mainly...then track down ungraded coins, expecting to make mistakes here and there.

Good luck, and keep us posted. I recently started a MS-65+ collection of my beloved Merc!!! I'm starting at 1930, when I complete it to 1945....then I'll go back to the beginning. Dreading that 1916-D at $20,000+:banghead: :banghead:

Rev, here is a small coin show near you 2 weeks from now.
Morgans are very popular and so are the Walkers.
I've found coin dealers very helpful answering any questions.
I've learned a lot over the years just by reading and going to coin shows.

one time-- one time only-- I bought a lot of coins on ebay. they sent me bout 10 coinis, one PCGS one NGC and one ANACs. The rest of the slabbings were crap. One of them was completely ridiculous, along these lines, and lo, it was a morgan too.

The only other slabbings I have seen that are reasonable gradings are PCI. lots of those I got are pretty fair.

I appreciate the info, everybody. I'll be studying up before I start buying, probably this Summer or Fall.

Try to find a local gold/silver jewelery exchange or pawn shop. Many people will take their silver coins in those places and sell them for a bit below spot price or trade them for other items. I found a place like this and I check in once a week. I have purchased so many Morgans this way and most of them are the more rare pre-1921 Morgans. Some of the coins I have sold for 20x my purchase price. If you can find a local dealer like this (who really doesn't know much about coins and doesn't have much interest in them) it's a gold mine. He will want to dump them just as bad as you will want to purchase them.
